Greg Cahill and the ‘Special Consensus’ are wondering if anyone can possibly help them out. Unfortunately, the venue they were scheduled to play in Nottingham on 17th July has gone into liquidation - meaning the proposed show has been cancelled…..so the band are hoping to find an alternative gig that would allow them to be within striking distance of the Guildtown Festival in Scotland the following day. The Special ‘C’ would also appreciate any offers for them to play between Monday 14th July - Thursday 17th July. If you can help this excellent - and very popular American band by providing/suggesting a possible venue - please email Greg via gcahillspc@aol.com as soon as possible. |

After the outstanding success of the first Orwell Festival in April last year, Chris Hockley and Ralph Keeble have organised the Second Orwell Bluegrass Festival. Taking place from 25th April until 27th April 2008, the event is planned to be larger than the last year‘s, with more bands (including the Dick Smith and Mike O’Reilly Band from the USA and G2 from Sweden); an additional concert session planned for Sunday afternoon plus, a wide range of instrument workshops! The Second Orwell Bluegrass Festival will also have a new home - with the Festival sited at the ‘Hallowtree’ Scout Camp at Nacton, on the south-east side of Ipswich and not far from the ‘Orwell Crossing Lorry Park’ that hosted the first festival. The promoters say that ‘Hallowtree’ is an impressive, large, modern, brick built complex which includes a main Hall, and five separate meeting rooms, together with toilet and shower facilities that lies within a picturesque 40 acre wood and meadowland site off the north shore of the Orwell estuary. Apparently there are also two designated camping and caravan areas, one of which will be a ‘quiet’ area. Whilst there will be water and washing up facilities - there are no electric ‘hook ups‘ available. The Festival stage will be in a large marquee, leaving the main hall to be utilised as the dining area, bar, ‘open mic’ and for picking sessions. Main meals will be provided by professional caterers (also offering a vegetarian option) and snacks will be available outside of the meal times. The Bar will be sensibly priced and include a local, Suffolk beer (known as ‘Adnams’). The hall’s remaining rooms will be for rehearsal, workshops and jamming. The cost of a weekend ticket is £35 per person (to include camping/caravanning). Friday evening only: £12pp. All day Saturday - plus evening £22pp. Saturday evening only, (after 6p.m) £15pp. Sunday: £10pp. Accompanied children under 15 - entrance free. As there is a restriction on attendance numbers, pre-purchase is highly recommended. For more information please go to www.orwellbluegrass.co.ukor contact the Festival organisers, Chris Hockley via email: baseplayer@btinternet.com- Tel:07889607612 or Ralph Keble - Tel: 07704489254. |

Bluegrass Music, what is it ?Bluegrass music is really more of a style of performance than a particular set of tunes or songs. Although there are pieces that have been written specifically as bluegrass numbers, the bulk of material played by bluegrass bands is extracted or based on earlier American folk traditions such as old-time or oldtimey as it is sometimes called. However, it is probably possible to take almost any song or tune and turn it into a "bluegrass" number. Bluegrass as a style is characterised by use of mostly un-electrified string instruments usually, fiddle, 5-string banjo, acoustic bass, guitar, mandolin, and sometimes a Dobro (resophonic or Hawaiian) guitar. Bluegrass music has it's origins in the 1930's with the acknowledged Father of Bluegrass Music, Grand Ole Opry legend Bill Monroe. The music took it's name from his band "The Bluegrass Boys". Presumably, they chose this name from their native "Bluegrass" region of Kentucky, so called because of the bluish green Poa species grass often found growing there. Monroe based his music on the old time fiddle bands and balladeers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, playing and singing their rustic melodies in a new, but still traditional and exciting way. Since those early days, bluegrass has kept going in more or less it's original form plus gathering a few off-shoots such as "Newgrass" along the way. Bluegrass, is today probably more popular than every, with movies such as "Brother Where Art Thou" and "Cold Mountain" bringing traditional American music to public attention. Fans of bluegrass music have a rather unusual profile compared with those of other popular music forms in that a very high percentage (probably 50% in a typical UK audience) of them actually perform as well. This I suppose, says something about the quality of a the music genre, music good enough to make you want to learn an instrument must have something going for it. Rod Smith |
